my computer was shutting off for what seemed to be no reason.

this is the problem with having four cats. it's actually the second time this has happened to me in the past two years

Arm & Hammmer makes a carpet freshener that has a pet hair release chemical in it. I put that on my carpets because I didn't want something real perfumy, just something with a bit of pleasantness to it and then I vacuumed. You wouldn't believe the amount of hair I vacuumed up from our carpet. The funny thing is that we have never had a pet animal inside our house; it's always just been the two of us!

I go to a lot of trouble to keep our carpets properly clean. I vacuum regularly and have them shampooed once a year. (No pets, no kids.)
We go barefoot inside the house so we prefer the comfort of carpet underfoot.
It all boils down to what you like or dislike, I guess.
